Design Variations

When designing your deck there are multiple factors to consider. Starting from the ground up:

  •  Posts: Steel direct buried or hardwood on stirrups pending engineering. Galvanised steel post have benefits through strength and longevity, timber posts are unable to be concreted in the ground but often match the timber on the deck and can be more appealing due to this.
  • Decking/Tiling: There are various products on the market now for decking. These include pine decking, hardwood (spotted gum, merbau, blackbutt, jarrah), composite decking (a combination of wood fibres, plastic, bonding agent) and tiling which involves installation of a fibre cement floor, waterproofing and tiling over this. Hardwood decking is more durable over pine and both can be re-finished if damaged or scratched. Composite decking when it was originally released was prone to scratching easily and unable to be repaired. New products are evolving, although we do prefer to stick with timber or tile.
  • Roof: There are a couple of options in roof styles, the first being no roof, another is to extend the existing roof and lastly a more cost effective option is to use a composite panel flyover roof. Each has their benefits and will suit customers depending on their budget and desired finish. Back decks with composite flyover roofs will be cheaper than extending the existing house roof over the new deck.
  • Balustrade: When selecting your choice of balustrade, you may already have a particular type in place you wish to match, or you can specify a new type. The import thing is your balustrade must be a minimum of 1000mm high and depending on the height of the balustrade from the ground, there may be restrictions on what position horizontal elements of the balustrade can be. Balustrade options are typically pine, hardwood (kwila), aluminium, stainless wire and glass.
  • Light and power: outdoor LED downlights are great for decks because they're flush, IP rated (protection against water ingress) and white to match the ceiling. Surface mounted ceiling lights or wall lights are another way to light up an outdoor deck. Most new decks these days we're installing at least one weatherproof socket outlet and outdoor ceiling fans in addition to lighting.
  • Painting/oiling: To ensure your new deck or verandah lasts the test of time, sealing of all exposed timber is a must. Timber decking can be acid washed and then sealed, structural timber should have some form of protection such as painting or joist protection. Mayo's has painters in house to help you decide and paint/oil your brand new deck to suit.
