Bathroom Design

When looking at the design of your bathroom, we need to consider a few things:

  • Layout: layouts can be restricted by plumbing locations on some projects. Every site is different. Our tips for layouts are to try and not make the toilet the first thing you see when you walk in the door, have the vanity close to the door as it’s used most frequently and ensure the shower area is in an area which can be well ventilated to reduce the opportunity for mould to grow.
  • Bath: Although not a necessity, we find most customers want a bath tub in at least one bathroom in their home. Most bath tubs will be free-standing or built-in. This information will be required before works commence to ensure correct plumbing and waterproofing. Bath tub sizes on average are between 1400 – 1800mm long. Most baths can have a shower screen added to them to be used as a stand in shower as well. A floor waste is required typically when a bath tub is installed.
  • Toilet: If you don’t have a separate toilet then you’ll need to allow room for one in your renovation. There are various options such as back to wall cistern and in-wall cistern where the cistern is placed inside the stud wall. These look great, although serviceability can be restricted. Our recommendation if choosing and in-wall cistern is to pick a high quality brand.
  • Vanity: There's lots of variables here but the first three points to establish are the width of your vanity, free-standing or wall hung and whether you'd like the sink mounted on top of the bench or recessed into the bench as this will change the plumbing
  • Mirror or shaving cabinet: Shaving cabinets with mirrors are great for storing items such as tooth brushes, hair products, shavers etc whilst retaining the functionality of a mirror. Be sure to pick your preferred style and width. We can recess these cabinets in the wall if notified before works start.
  • Electrical: We recommend an extraction fan in the bathroom wherever possible. Downlights are great for a clean look but if you have the room we recommend feature lighting. Keep in mind, electricity and water don't mix well and there are limitations on where power and lighting can be placed as per Australian Standards. Our team will be able to inform you on exclusion zones as per AS3000.
  • Shower screens: framed, semi-framed and frameless (cheapest to most expensive). Another option becoming more popular these days is a black framed shower screen. Installation will vary depending on the situation
  • In-wall niches: great for sitting your soap and shampoo on for a clean look inside your shower with no protruding shelves. Sizes will vary depending on budget and other services inside the wall but they're a nice addition to any modern bathroom.
  • Tiles: the style, size, shape and layout could be considered one of the most important things in your bathroom. We suggest finding tiles that look nice, but are also easy to clean with a flat non-porous surface. Tile installation costs will be dependant on the number of niche's, total area and whether you'd like full height wall tiling or just a skirting tile outside of the shower area. Also consider what type of floor wastes you'd like. Tiled floor wastes provide a seamless look.
  • Tapware: You'll need a vanity mixer, shower mixer/diverter and bath taps if required
  • Paint: For any surfaces which aren't tiled, they'll need to be sealed and painted. We recommend a standard ceiling white on the ceilings, for walls you can look at matching your other walls in the property and finding a colour which compliments your tiles.

The above list is quite extensive but our team can guide you through the process. Reach out to us for a quote on your bathroom renovation today!
